Philippines, One of the Top BPO Destinations in the World

With the increasing demand for the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, the Philippines is steadily rising to the top ranks of workers falling only second to Bangalore. This is according to a ranking by Tholons, a strategic offshoring advisory firm. Tholons ranked all the cities in the world based on their potential and capabilities for the BPO industry in the Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations Rankings list released last week.

Metro Manila rose to second place beating Mumbai. Other cities in the Philippines like Cebu have also moved up the rankings because of the improvements in their ratings. Cebu maintained its spot in the top ten at number eight while Davao City and Bacolod City moved up one spot each. Davao City was previously ranked 71 while Bacolod City was at 94. Santa Rosa went up two spots making it to 82 from the 84th place. These five cities outside of the metropolitan Manila prove that the whole of the Philippines is contributing to the business process outsourcing industry.

Most multinational companies prefer to reach out to the Philippines’ business process outsourcing sector because of the competitive workforce and multilingual abilities of the Filipinos much like in India. By reaching out to other capable countries, the offshore outsourcing sector has been steadily improving and developing through the years.

The Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICT) together with the private sector is pushing for the improvement of the industry in the country. They are working together to attract other companies to engage in offshore outsourcing in the country. The “Next Wave Cities” program was created by the DOST-ICT to identify places outside the metro which have the potential to be the next BPO site in the country.

In 2010, the Philippines became the top exporter of voice-driven BPO in the world according to the Everest Group while being second to India in terms of non-voice BPO like the back-office services. The country provided over 200,000 employees to the outsourcing industry.

The Philippines prove to be one of the most competitive countries to engage in the BPO industry with the multilingual workforce, competitive telecommunications infrastructures, and the competitive range of salary for the workers. The industry sources also attribute the country’s success to the great influence of the Western culture to the people.
